Commonly asked questions about acupuncture

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture works with the nervous system to reduce pain and inflammation and is a good supplement to Chiropractic care. It increases blood flow to the internal organs (heart, lungs, liver, brain, kidneys, etc.) to help them function at their best. It also promotes hormonal balance and the release of endorphins, known as “the runner’s high.”

Does acupuncture hurt?

Dr. Yarborough uses a gentle technique that causes very little sensation. Acupuncture pins are hair-thin and have a round tip. And so, what patients sometimes report is a momentary feeling of heat or pressure in the area or a slight “zing” sensation. In the treatment room, the patient is always in control. If a pins doesn’t feel right–which is rare– it is removed immediately.

What kinds of needles are used?

They are individually wrapped, sterile, one-time-use, disposable, needles. Needles come in different sizes and are used according to your particular treatment.

How long do treatments last?

About forty five minutes.

How many treatments are needed?

This depends on your condition and goals. With your first consultation and treatment, you will be given a reasonable idea of what to expect.

What about Chinese herbs?

Dr. Yarborough is able to provide herbal remedies in easy-to-take.
