Being a personal injury law firm, we see hundreds of clients a year who have been involved in car accidents and we often get the question from them “Should I go to a chiropractor?”  Any time one of our clients is in pain, we tell them that they should definitely go.  The reason is simple: chiropractors are very effective in helping to reduce pain, particularly for those injured in accidents.

Ways a Chiropractor Can Help:

You Don’t Always Know the Damage: Many times after people are involved in a car accident they want to believe that everything is fine, so they ignore their aches and pains and treat them as minor.  But you may be underestimating the extent of damage that was done to your body.  Remember that getting into a car accident it a traumatic event on your body.  The human body was not built to withstand high speeds and sudden blunt force impact.  A chiropractor can do a thorough exam and really determine the extent of the damage.  You may not be aware that your neck pain is a result of whiplash or that your spine is not aligned in the proper manner.  Or you may not associate your headache as a result of the accident.  As accident lawyers we always recommend that our clients visit a chiropractor if they are experiencing any pain to get an exam and understand what injuries have been sustained.

Getting Treated Early Can Prevent Long Term Pain: Many of the injuries suffered in an accident are internal soft tissue injuries that can’t be seen.  Left untreated, these injuries can heal by forming scar tissue and can lead to long term chronic pain.  Dealing with your injuries at the time of the accident and getting them treated properly can lead to proper healing.  The worst thing to come out of an accident would be to suffer with long term chronic pain that could have been prevented.

Soft Tissue Injuries Can Be Treated: If you go to a general practitioner, he or she may take an x-ray after your accident of any areas you are complaining about pain in.  But an x-ray will generally show breaks and defects in the bone.  It may not pick up soft tissue injuries such as muscles, ligaments, tendons and discs.  If you have something like a slipped disc, there are many things that a chiropractor can do to get your spine back in alignment to alleviate the excruciating pain that you are feeling.

The important thing to remember is that there is something you can do to help with pain after an accident.  Just taking pain pills is not going to fix your problem, and pain medication is serious medicine with potentially addictive side effects.  A chiropractor is there to work with you to find the source of your pain and alleviate it so that you can get back to normal and feel great.
